UN flag raised for the first time in PH university

The United Nations (UN) flag was officially hoisted for the first time at the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman in Quezon City on November 6, 2018.

Led by UP CIFAL Philippines and the UP School of Statistics (SoS), the UN flag raising ceremony symbolizes that the UP campus is now a “UN city,” reflecting the shared values of the university and the UN.

UP hosts CIFAL Philippines, an affiliate center of the UN Institute for Training and Research, which promotes the sustainable development goals.

UP CIFAL Philippines Director Dr. Edna Co, UN Resident Coordinator Ola Almgren, UP Board of Regents members Atty. Angelo Jimenez and Atty. Frederick Farolan, UP Vice President for Academic Affairs Cynthia Bautista, UP Diliman Chancellor Dr. Michael Tan, UP SoS Dean Dr. Dennis Mapa, as well as other UP officials and deans of colleges graced the flag raising ceremony.

During a simple program, Almgren and the UP officials recognized the immense role of the Philippines in the UN through former UP President Carlos P. Romulo, the first Filipino to serve as president of the UN General Assembly.

Partners of UP CIFAL Philippines from 3M Philippines and Commission on Filipinos Overseas as well as students of UP SoS also attended the event.
